NICKI MINAJ SAYS ALOT ON BILLBOARD.COM
Aug 10, 2010 Celebrity Interviews
I think it is safe to say I’m slightly becoming Nicki crazy..lol. Well not crazy but she is really growing on me…like really! As mentioned before I am a sucker for artist that push the envelope of artistry. Nicki is etching her place in the industry as one and I DIG IT! Recently on a fellow bloggers site Necolebitchie.com, via Billboard.com I watched an interview of Nicki. To me Nik did an awesome job at presenting herself. We all know that she’s very witty like her mentor Wayne but she’s also very well spoken. Being real, this came to me as a surprise. Because Cyo never looks at anything on surface, I watched the interview and was able to pick up on a few things. She used words like notion, nuances, and fraudulent all words that people don’t expect rappers from the hood to know the meaning of, let alone use them within their proper context.
When asked what are the positive effects of being in a group like young money and Nik responded:
“Well, it keeps my street edge. I can’t get too up in the sky because Wayne would be like no I need you to be that, I need that Nik you know. So it keeps me grounded.”
Hearing her speak about staying grounded said a lot to me. Nik was real enough to share that she can use a reminder to not become too arrogant or so hollywood. Nik also did a great job at answering a question that I’ve seen a lot of artist fail miserably at. Watch the video to see what she had to say when asked why she changed her rap style from the come up days to today. Needless to say I was throughly impressed with her interviewing skills and am
becoming a fan of her persona (I’m using this word within it’s proper context..lol) However, I did walk away with a slight concern. Watching Nik come from the gutta to mainstream artist is allowing me to witness her evolution. And like with many artist that came before her, the evolution can either work for or against her. Listening to her talk about applying effort to not become too hollywood and how she doesn’t like her arm tat because it taints her classic beauty while in evening gowns, suggests that she fancies being a lady. She fancies it so much that she has the potential to drop a lot of her hood mentality to become a classier woman in which I dig; however, I just want it to come from a sincere place. I tell people all the time, I have no problem with the hood. Some of our strongest, wisest and classiest people are products of the hood. I also believe that it is possible to maintain that side while being able to carry yourself in a manner that related to the masses hence classy persona. So I say go for it Nik, show these rap fees that you can still get down while being a lady.
FYI: I noticed that she avoids naming certain artist when asked about who inspires her and artist that she would like to work with i.e. Beyonce. Being a lover of the music industry I am aware that artist have to make sure they separate themselves from other artist that may have any slight similarity but I hope that doesn’t prevent the two from working together on a track. A few bars by Nik with Bey on the hook? (In my soulja boy voice) that…right there..would be…ree-dic-u-lous!
