BET AWARDS: CHRIS BROWN LEAVES HEART ON STAGE

20100628115058290g1_115727_0-1Last night aired the 10th anniversary of the BET Music Awards and I must admit I really enjoyed the show (with the exception of Beyonce not being in the building… lol).  But anyways, the best performance of the night for me was the tribute to Michael Jackson by Chris Brown.  It was as if Michael took over his body for a short period of time and he was able to embody the essence of the legend.  Although, we saw him break down to the point that he was not able to sing, the dance performance was the part that completely blew me away.  He put his heart and soul into that tribute and I can easily see why he became overwhelmed.

DROP OF STYLE: SPLASH OF CLASS

will-jada-smith-3One part of style that tends to be over looked is class. Most people believe swagger is just about being fashionable but in my opinion a person with class has swagger. Class is simply built up on etiquette, style, integrity and confidence. Yes Gentlemen, men can have class too we just carry it out a bit different than the ladies do. Here are some key points on how to develop class.

AMERICAN APPAREL: JOB REQUIREMENTS…ABILITY V. HAIR QUALITY

a11A former American Apparel manager sent Gawker a few guidelines she was told to follow when hiring. For black women, she was told, “none of the trashy kind that come in, we don’t want that. We’re not trying to sell our clothes to them. Try to find some of these classy black girls, with nice hair, you know?”

***Before I begin, I find it quite amazing that curl patterns in a black woman’s hair defines it’s quality. Not the ability of it to look well groomed, but the idea of it being not 100% black hair.

SPIRITUALITY VS. RELIGION

spirituality4As a confirmed Catholic, I try to live up to my religious morals and ethics as I am expected to. During the Lenten season I went to church on a regular schedule and attempted to bring myself closer to my religion. However, I noticed that I was more focused on being closer to my religion than being closer to God. I’m not one to talk about religion much because it is a rather touchy subject for me due to much of the badmouthing Catholics receive from those of other religions.  As a 13-year-old kid I can remember being told I was going to hell because I worship Mary (which I don’t) by the parents of one of my friends. I can also remember being ridiculed on Ash Wednesday for coming to school with ashes on my forehead.  Since I was younger, I received joy from the fact that I knew around February or March everyone who I received criticism from was going to join us Catholics in our Mardi Gras festivities. Honestly, I actually grew tired of defending my religion and at one point I never said I was Catholic if the subject ever came up around me.

SMELL AS GOOD AS YOU LOOK PT.2

manCologneIt is a fact that most men choose their cologne by simply going into a department store and purchase the first cologne that smells good, or what they smelled on someone else. Gentlemen this is not the way to go when shopping for the perfect cologne. As I stated in part 1 of “Smell as good as you look” your body chemistry and skin texture plays an important role when shopping for the perfect cologne.

LIVING IN A MEDIATED SOCIETY

watching-tvOne of the more interesting things I learned in my perceptibly estrogen driven “Women and Minorities in the Media” class is the fact that we live in a mediated society. By mediated it simply means we are media-driven and our lives and interactions as well as what we deem as important ARE more often than not produced and disseminated by media. While that may not totally be a bad thing, the deeper you look into it, I find it hard to think it’s not 100% true. One major example that stuck out to me was dealing with archetypes. An archetype is a model of behavior and we can identify with and relate to archetypes as they are primary characters or personalities of the human condition. Archetypes are everywhere in the media.

BEAUTY OVER THE HEART?

18169150-208705b91f2e84f410e3ef066c11f2244a626293-fullThe war between good looks or good character being the primary attraction factor is no stranger to conversation.  Some people feel that in order to initiate a relationship there must be a physical attraction and then there are those who feel like an awesome personality make the worst flaws seem beautiful.  Either way, to work towards a quality relationship seems to be the goal of both perspectives but what should matter most when it comes to procreating or producing offspring?  Recently on twitter one of my female followers tweeted that  she wanted her baby’s father to be tall handsome and he must have good hair.  Yes, the infamous good hair trait..lol.

I can vividly remember the craze that surrounded Brad Pit and Angelina Jolie’s first child together.  The world was anxious to see if their beautiful features would collide to make a spectacle of flawless beauty.
